Mountains: Geological Function in Scripture

A Careful Islamic Reading

The Quran presents mountains as stabilizing features and signs of God's power. Geology shows that mountains have deep roots and affect the crust locally, but they are formed by tectonic processes that can also produce earthquakes; they do not prevent the earth from shaking in an absolute scientific sense. The verses should be read as truthful, accessible signs of an ordered earth, not as a claim that mountains are global anti-earthquake pegs.

The Quran calls mountains rawasi—firmly set features—and compares them to pegs (Quran 16:15; 21:31; 78:6–7). The verses connect mountains with the earth's habitability and direct attention to God's ordering of creation. They use language available to every audience rather than technical geological terms.

Biblical Language About Mountains

The Bible approaches mountains from theological and poetic perspectives as well. Mountains serve as symbols of permanence, divine presence, and foundational stability in the created order. They appear as places where God meets humanity, from Mount Sinai where the Torah was revealed to Mount Zion as the center of God's earthly kingdom. The Psalms treat mountains as ancient entities that inspire faith and wonder, while the Gospels employ mountain imagery both literally—in accounts of Jesus teaching and transfiguring on mountains—and metaphorically, as when Jesus teaches that faith can 'move mountains.' Habakkuk's prophetic vision describes mountains crumbling before God's majesty, emphasizing their transience compared to divine power. Like the Quranic verses, Biblical mountain references combine observation of natural reality with theological significance.

What Geology Shows

Mountains commonly form where tectonic plates collide, where volcanoes build land, or where crust is uplifted. Many ranges have deep crustal roots through isostasy. Mountains affect erosion, water, climate, and local crustal balance, but tectonic mountain belts are also associated with earthquakes. Geology therefore does not support the slogan that mountains were inserted to stop all shaking.

Reading Pegs and Stability Carefully

Quran 78:6–7 compares mountains to pegs, an image that fits their visible height and hidden roots in many ranges. Quranic references to rawasi emphasize firmness and the habitability of the earth. Premodern commentators generally read these verses as signs of stability given by God, not as a lesson in plate tectonics.
A fair modern reading can note the fitting imagery and the role mountains play in landscapes without claiming that they prevent earthquakes or that every mountain has the same geometry.

Biblical Hermeneutics: Poetry, Prophecy, and Permanence

Christian biblical scholarship has long recognized that much of the Bible employs poetic, prophetic, and metaphorical language. The Psalms, from which much mountain imagery derives, are liturgical poetry designed to evoke emotional and spiritual responses. When Psalm 121 speaks of lifting one's eyes to the hills for help, the passage operates at a symbolic level—mountains as unchanging witnesses to God's faithfulness, not as literal sources of aid. Similarly, when Jesus teaches that faith can move mountains, biblical scholars understand this as hyperbolic language emphasizing the power of faith, not a literal geological claim. Habakkuk's vision of mountains crumbling before God is prophetic and apocalyptic language, conveying the ultimate impermanence of all creation compared to the eternal divine reality. Biblical Hebrew poetry frequently employs hyperbole, metaphor, and parallelism to communicate spiritual truths. Early Christian interpreters developed sophisticated allegorical and typological methods to understand how scriptural language might convey multiple levels of meaning. The broader Christian tradition has never claimed that mountains are literally the primary mechanism by which Earth maintains its stability, nor has it proposed that faith literally moves geological formations. Instead, these images serve theological purposes: communicating God's transcendence over nature, the permanence of divine promises, and the transformative power of faith.

Scholarly Approaches: Common Ground and Differing Emphases

Interpreters broadly agree that scriptural mountain language is theological and rhetorically powerful rather than a technical account of plate tectonics. They disagree over whether particular images also anticipate modern findings. A careful compatibility reading may compare 'pegs' with the unseen depth of mountain roots as an analogy, while acknowledging that the texts do not describe isostasy and that roots do not stop tectonic motion.
The stronger claim that modern geology confirms mountains as stabilizers is not supportable. Geological evidence instead associates many mountain belts with ongoing deformation. Theological meaning does not depend on making that scientific claim.

Mountains store water, shape climates, mark routes, and humble the observer through their scale. The Quran repeatedly moves from such features to gratitude and accountability. That invitation remains true without turning poetic, accessible language into a geological formula.

The Quran does not say that mountains prevent every earthquake, and Islam gains nothing from defending that weak claim. Mountains do have deep roots and major roles in the structure and life of landscapes. The Quran uses them truthfully as visible signs of stability, scale, and the ordered creation of God.
