Overview
What Does Nakba Mean?
history
What Happened in 1948?
The causes and sequence differed from place to place. Some communities fled direct attack or expulsion. Others fled fear, nearby fighting, or collapsing services. Benny Morris's archive-based study examines these local patterns and debates. Historians disagree about the weight of particular causes and decisions, but serious history does not deny the scale of the displacement. Many Palestinians were not permitted to return, and families lost homes, land, and livelihoods.
history
Who Is a Palestine Refugee?
This is an agency definition for assistance and registration. It is not the only way refugee status is discussed in international law or Palestinian life. Not every displaced Palestinian is registered with UNRWA. People displaced in 1967, Palestinians outside UNRWA's fields, and people with another citizenship may have different legal records while still carrying a history of displacement.
history
Return, Compensation, and an Unresolved Question
The resolution was adopted by the General Assembly, not issued as a court judgment. No final agreement has resolved the refugee question. That is why refugee camps, family documents, keys, village names, property claims, and memories remain politically and personally important across generations.
interpretation
Memory Is About People, Not Only Numbers
Remembering the Nakba should not become hatred of Jews or denial of Jewish suffering, including persecution in Europe and displacement of Jewish communities in the wider region. One injustice does not cancel another. The Islamic demand is to testify truthfully and defend the wronged without transferring guilt to an entire people.
scripture
The Islamic Duty of Honest Justice
Islam invites people to worship Allah and live by truth. Concern for Palestine becomes stronger dawah when it shows disciplined mercy: facts are checked, the oppressed are defended, and prejudice is refused.
Key passage
Quran
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
