Who Are the People of Palestine?

Palestinians include Muslims, Christians, and people of other or no religious commitments. Families live in towns and villages across historic Palestine and in a global diaspora. Their identity is shaped by language, local memory, family life, worship, work, and attachment to particular places. It describes a people and a national identity; it does not mean that every Palestinian shares the same politics or personal beliefs.

Identity Is Historical and Personal

Modern national identities develop through family networks, institutions, education, language, religious communities, migration, and political change. Palestine was a geographic name long before modern nationalism, while a specifically Palestinian national consciousness developed gradually. In the late Ottoman period, towns, newspapers, schools, trade networks, municipal bodies, and religious institutions connected local communities. Under the British Mandate, political associations, elections, the press, and opposition to competing national projects made Palestinian national politics more explicit.

Local, Arab, religious, and Palestinian identities could overlap. This history does not erase Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Samaritan, Armenian, Bedouin, or other connections to the land, and it does not make Palestinians a single political bloc. It does, however, explain why Palestinians understand themselves as a people with a real history and continuing attachment to their homeland.

Key Events in Modern Palestinian History

Several events frame the modern Palestinian experience. The 1917 Balfour Declaration and the British Mandate placed competing national projects within one territory. The 1947 United Nations partition recommendation and the 1948 war were followed by the Nakba (catastrophe), when more than 700,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes and became refugees. Historians continue to debate particular causes and episodes, but the scale of displacement and its lasting effect are not in doubt.
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was established in 1964 as an umbrella organization for Palestinian political factions. After the 1967 war, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza came under Israeli military occupation, reshaping Palestinian political and social life.
The First Intifada began in 1987 as a mass uprising involving strikes, demonstrations, civil disobedience, and armed violence. It helped bring the Palestinian question back to the center of diplomacy and was followed by the 1993 Oslo process, in which Israel and the PLO recognized one another. The Second Intifada began in 2000 after the collapse of the peace process and escalating confrontations, bringing grave suffering to Palestinian and Israeli civilians. These milestones do not explain every later development, but they help readers understand displacement, political organization, and the continuing Palestinian attachment to home.

Start With Human Dignity

When reading about Palestine, begin with the basic fact that the people being discussed are human beings with names, families, grief, hopes, and ordinary responsibilities. Distinguish a government, an armed group, a religious tradition, and a civilian population. Dates, authorship, and context matter, especially when a claim is used to judge an entire people. Islamic ethics requires truthfulness and justice: the Quran commands believers to stand firm for justice, even when it is difficult (Quran 4:135), and teaches that peoples and tribes were made to know one another rather than claim racial superiority (Quran 49:13).
