The Medinan Period (622–632 CE)

After the hijra to Medina in 622 CE, the Prophet led the first Muslim community. About 28 surahs are classified as Medinan. They address worship, family, commerce, inheritance, social duties, relations with other communities, and warfare. These revelations joined spiritual guidance to practical law. Revelation continued until shortly before the Prophet's death. Recitation and memorization remained central, while writing supplied a second safeguard.

Oral Transmission and Memorization

Recitation was the Quran's public form. Companions learned passages from the Prophet, repeated them in prayer, and taught them to others. Reports describe Gabriel reviewing the Quran with Muhammad twice in his final Ramadan. Some companions memorized the whole text, while many knew large portions.
The seven ahruf describe a permitted early range; the term is debated and is not simply seven dialects or the later seven canonical readings. Preservation rested on public memory working together with written records, so one person's mistake could be checked by many reciters.

Written Sources During the Prophet's Lifetime

The Quran was also written during the Prophet's lifetime on available materials, including leather, stones, bones, palm fronds, and papyrus. Scribes recorded revelation as it came. These portions supported memory but were not yet one organized codex. Islamic sources name many scribes and describe the Prophet correcting written material. After his death, the written portions and memorized text formed the basis of the first comprehensive compilation.

The Standardized Compilation Under Caliph Uthman

As Islam spread, pronunciation differences and personal copies risked disputes. Around 650 CE, Caliph Uthman appointed Zayd ibn Thabit and a committee to prepare standard copies from the collection kept by Hafsa. Copies went to major centers, and unofficial copies were withdrawn to prevent competing written standards.
The Uthmanic rasm, or consonantal outline, became the base of later manuscripts and could accommodate authorized readings. The named qiraat were formalized later; they are not separate Qurans, but transmitted readings within the same early text. Uthman's action was quality control, not the composition of a new Quran.

How the Text Was Checked

Traditional reports describe Zayd ibn Thabit checking written materials against reciters, not relying on private memory alone. Uthman's committee used the collected sheets kept with Hafsa and distributed standard copies. Public recitation made silent alteration difficult because the community already knew the text.
