The Quran describes boundaries between bodies of water. Oceanography confirms that waters with different salinity, temperature, and density can form visible fronts and layers, while also mixing over time. The Quran emphasizes the separation of fresh and salt water in at least four distinct passages. Surah Al-Furqaan (25:53) states that God "released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter," and explicitly mentions that He "placed between them a barrier." Surah Faatir (35:12) elaborates that "the two seas are not alike" and describes their different characteristics while noting that humans extract sustenance and wealth from both. Surah Ar-Rahmaan (55:19) describes the seas as "meeting [side by side]," suggesting proximity despite separation. Surah An-Naml (27:61) includes the barrier between seas as an example of divine creation worthy of reflection. These passages share common themes: the distinctness of the two bodies of water, the existence of a physical or chemical boundary, and the availability of resources from both.

Biblical Accounts of the Sea's Boundaries
The Bible contains its own recurring theme of divinely fixed boundaries associated with the sea, though the specific phenomenon addressed differs from the Quran's fresh-water/salt-water barrier. In Job 38:8-11, God rhetorically asks Job, "Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb, when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness, marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors, and said, 'Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?'" This describes a boundary that confines the sea and prevents it from overrunning the land—a coastal or shoreline limit, not a boundary between two distinct bodies of water. Jeremiah 5:22 and Proverbs 8:29 echo the same theme: in Jeremiah, God declares that he has "placed the sand for the bound of the sea, by a perpetual decree, that it can't pass it," while Proverbs personifies Wisdom recalling that God "gave to the sea its boundary, that the waters should not violate his commandment." Genesis 1:9-10 describes a related but distinct act at creation: God gathering "the waters under the sky... Together to one place" so that "dry land" appears, establishing the basic division between land and sea rather than between two seas of differing composition. What Happens When Waters Meet
Fresh and salt water differ in density and can form fronts, layers, and salt wedges. Temperature and current differences also create boundaries. These interfaces can persist, but they are dynamic: tides, wind, and turbulence mix water across them. Oceanography finds separation with exchange, not two bodies that never mingle.

Pre-modern observers could notice that river water sometimes retained a different color, taste, sediment load, or surface flow after entering the sea. Greek and Roman geographical writing contains observations of rivers or water masses remaining distinguishable. Such observations did not require knowledge of molecular diffusion or modern fluid dynamics.

What Barzakh Can Mean
Barzakh means a barrier, boundary, or separation. In Quran 25:53 and 55:19–20, it describes God's ordering of waters. The wording does not require a solid or impenetrable wall. A maintained distinction amid ongoing contact fits both the Arabic image and observed estuaries and ocean fronts.
