Overview
The Question in Brief
This does not require the claim that every biblical sentence is false. The Quran confirms truth in earlier revelation, criticizes particular acts of distortion, and judges disputed beliefs.

The Christian Preservation Claim
That response deserves a fair hearing. The Muslim question is not whether God can preserve revelation. It is whether those promises identify every later biblical book and reading as perfectly protected, especially when the manuscripts, canons, and Gospel accounts differ.

Earlier Communities Were Entrusted With Revelation
The Quran accuses some people of writing a text with their own hands and then claiming it came from God (2:79), twisting words or meanings, concealing truth, and forgetting part of what they had been reminded of. These are specific moral charges, not a blanket statement that no truth remains in earlier scripture.
Key passage
Quran
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.

Jeremiah 8:8 and the Scribes
The verse should not be made to prove more than it says. It does show that the Bible itself can criticize religious authorities for turning written revelation into falsehood, whether through the pen, the teaching built around it, or both.
Key passage
Bible
“‘How do you say, “We are wise, and Yahweh’s law is with us?” But, behold, the false pen of the scribes has worked falsely.

The Quran Invites a Coherence Test
For Muslims, the Quran's consistent monotheism is central evidence. It confirms earlier prophets while correcting doctrines that make a human messenger divine or transfer one person's moral guilt to another.
Key passage
Quran
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.
Quran 4:82

A Distinct Promise for the Final Revelation
Quoting the promise alone would be circular for someone who does not yet accept the Quran. The claim can also be compared with the Quran's early manuscript evidence, public recitation, mass memorization, the Uthmanic written tradition, and the controlled canonical readings. The theological promise and the historical preservation case support one another.

What Tahrif Means
Classical scholars differed over how widely textual alteration occurred. The careful Islamic position is not that every verse in today's Bible was rewritten. It is that the earlier revelation is no longer available in a form that can function independently as the final, fully reliable criterion. Truth remains, but it must be judged by the Quran.

The Christian Response
They do not remove every difficulty. Some passages are absent from the earliest manuscripts, different Christian traditions recognize different canons, and the Gospels sometimes preserve materially different accounts of the same event. Even a substantially recoverable text still requires a decision about which books are revelation and which theological interpretation is true.

Why God Allowed Human Failure
Guidance was never extinguished. Prophets, faithful believers, and surviving truth continued to call people to God. The final revelation then confirmed what was true, exposed major distortions, and received a different promise of preservation.

What Islam Does Not Claim
The claim is more precise: the Torah and Gospel were true revelations; the present biblical collection preserves some of that truth together with human transmission and interpretation; and the Quran is the final authority for distinguishing between them.
