Did Jesus Claim to Be God?

Christians commonly read John 8:58, John 10:30-36, and John 14:9 as evidence that Jesus is divine. Those readings deserve a fair hearing. Jesus also cites people called 'gods' in Scripture, prays to God, calls the Father the only true God, and refers to the Father as 'my God.' Islam concludes that Jesus is the Messiah and uniquely honored messenger who called people to worship God alone.

Did Jesus Worship God?

Both the Bible and the Quran record Jesus praying, fasting, and prostrating to God. The Gospels show him praying before dawn, all night on a mountainside, and face-down in Gethsemane; the Quran quotes him saying, 'I am the servant of Allah.' Christianity explains this as the incarnate Son communing with the Father. Islam sees the plain devotion of God's honored prophet and concludes that Jesus's God is the only proper object of worship.

Islam and Christianity both call Jesus the Messiah. The title means 'anointed one' and originally described human kings and priests chosen by God. Christianity connects it to Jesus's divinity and atoning death. Islam preserves its prophetic meaning: Jesus is God's chosen Messiah and servant, sent to Israel and supported with miracles, while God alone receives worship.

The earliest Christian sources present Jesus as crucified, and most historians accept that a crucifixion occurred. The Quran nevertheless states that Jesus was neither killed nor crucified, but that it was made to appear so, and that God raised him.
